As the chairperson of the Lay Commission of theGeneral Board of the African Methodist EpiscopalChurch, it gives me great pleasure to salute the officersand members of the Connectional Lay Organizationas they embark upon their celebratory centennialjourney. In 1946, The Bench of Bishops in their officialstate to the General Conference stated that the “lay movement enhancesthe full program of the Church and helps to usher in a period of high expectancy.”I concur wholeheartedly with that sentiment! Greetings from the CLO 100 Co-Chairs

In Nashville, TN at the 49th Session of the General Conference in July 2012,the African Methodist Episcopal Church the Connectional Lay Organizationwill celebrate the 100th anniversary since the passage of the legislation fromwhich evolved our beloved Connectional Lay Organization. The 100th anniversary is a praiseworthy milestone in the history of the laity of the AfricanMethodist Episcopal Church.From August 18, 2011 through July 2012, Lay Organizations at the Connectional, Episcopal District, Conference, and local levels will hold celebrations so that people around the world will know and commemorate the important roles the Connectional Lay Organization and its members have played in kingdom building, denominational governance, and improving the social and economic conditions of their communities.During the centennial year of the Connectional Lay Organization, CLO 100, Lay Organizations at every level should sponsor activities to celebrate laywitness and ministries; the contributions of the laity within the African Methodist Episcopal Church; lay members who have made a positive difference in the larger society, outside the AME Church; to honor the legislative process that brought into existence, the forerunner entities that developed into the Connectional Lay Organization; to pay tribute to early pioneers in the lay movement; and to celebrate our 100 year history of progress and achievement.On May 23, 1912 legislation passed entitled, Laymen’s Missionary and Forward Movement of the AME Church.” The bill put forward the followingobjectives for the movement:“1. The object of the Movement is to educate and inspire along the linesof Missions, Home and Foreign.2. It is to increase the membership of the Church on the part of menand boys. It seeks to engage them more actively in all Christian service.3. It is to bring into the church a larger efficiency and a larger givingof life and means.4. To stimulate an interest in Bible study.”From this legislative beginning almost 100 years ago to May 23, 2012 members of t he Connectional Lay Organization will have been blessed to be a part of this continuum of lay witness, leadership training, and advocacy. To celebrate the ministries of the laity, each local lay organization is invited to include in its activities or meetings or special events a CLO 100 Founders Program, a CLO 100 Proclamation Ceremony, or a CLO 100 Birthday Party in honor of the Connectional Lay Organization. For greater impact and visibility, several local Lay Organizations in a community, might come together for such an event. Conferences and Episcopal Districts are invited to do likewise,but the emphasis should be at the local level. Let the world know that the Connectional Lay Organization is 100! Be Creative! Be Bold! Be Visionary! Enlarge Your Territory!This toolkit is designed to stimulate your creativity and to provide you with basic tools and ideas to become engaged with the CLO 100. Thank you for your participation in the CLO 100 Kick-Off luncheon during the 32nd BiennialSession of the Connectional Lay Organization in Detroit, MI. The culminating event of the CLO 100 will take place during the 49th Sessionof the General Conference in Nashville, TN. Hawkins, the first layman to become Financial Secretary of the AME (General) Church1916 The new Laymen’s League reorganized as the Connectional Lay College Laymen1928 Secured equal representation of laypeople in the General Conference1932 Granted the right for laypeople to serve on the Episcopal Committee1936 Permanently re-established the right of laypeople to serve in equal numbers on the Episcopal Committee1939 Elected a layman, Professor A. S. Our God of Overflow.by lionel MerrittDOLA Bahamas Conference, Eleventh Episcopal District Lay OrganizationSCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good.Sometimes in the mist of our famine and recession we just seek small bailouts. We ask God just for enough to service the mortgage or rent: one month payment, or service of the arrears. We ask God for sufficient money to pay this month's electricity bill, to avoid disconnection. We pray for just enough cash to go to the food store, so our children can have meals after school.Being contented is good and in many cases even godly. But occasionally we should remind ourselves that God is also a God of overflow. Numerous Scripture verses confirm this. Of special note is Proverbs 3:10 and Joel 2:24Further it is useful to note that God uses the same power to do both small and great things. What we deem a great miracle does not stretch God any more. God, who can pay the mortgage for one month, can also clear the whole mortgage note. The same God who we call upon for a $5 lunch can supply a gourmet banquet. This was demonstrated when God fed the five thousand. They were fed to overflow.Notwithstanding all we hear about the world recession, let us hold before us the vision of our God of overflow. God's power to provide fully for us is not affected by the chaos on Wall Street. Whether interest rate rise or fall, God is still able to provide abundantly for the children of God.Dear God, we rejoice in the knowledge that you are a God of abundance, a God of overflow. We look to you today to satisfy our needs in accordance with 2 Corinthians 9:8. Let us be satisfied beyond our present needs so we can help others. Thank you God of overflow. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Tips on Making Your Presentations InterestingOne of the tragedies of this life is to have to endue a poor presentation by a knowledgeable person, who knows his/ her subject. We have all heard the saying, "it is not what you say, but how you say it". The 22nd century version will be, "the way you say it, is far more important than what you say". I have seen persons with meager information make brilliant presentations, while persons with floods of facts and figures become sleeping aids to their audiences. Yes, presentation styles and methods are important. Here are a few tips on making great presentations.1. Never, never, never start your presentations with excuses or lamentations.Some persons do this to deal with speaker's jitters, or to be polite, or to explain why they are about to make a poor presentation. Please don't do it. It sets a negative tone for the whole presentation. Some skilful speakers can revive the presentation after a negative opening. Most of us can't.2. Consider the audience.If you are making the presentation to your regular Monday night meeting, the pitch must be different from that of a special meeting where persons are hearing you for the first time. For the regular meeting consider who will be there. Then consider what you can say that may interest them. It is a good idea, to "feel out" persons on what may interest them on the subject, prior to planning your presentation. You can do this by asking direct questions, or by making jokes about issues on the subject. (If there are hearing you for the first time, you have "new speaker" goodwill to exploit. We will consider this another time). 3. Limit your information.This is very important if you are an "expert" on the subject or have a keen interest in the topic. Bear in mind that what excites you may be of passing interest to others. Be clear on the main points you want to make, and avoid excessive detail. If your audience is interested in the large picture, they will ask for the details. Give enough to demonstrate you know what you are talking about, and keep moving. If the listeners do not catch the big picture, small details will be boring.4. Tell a story. (Take a leaf out of Jesus’ book).People like stories, so give them one. It is easy to tell a story if you connect your main points and set them in everyday scenes. The story can be imaginary. If you can see the story, others will too. Let us say you are giving a presentation on the Ten Commandments. People have heard about the Ten Commandments from the time they were sleeping in cradles. You have neither "new subject" nor "new speaker" goodwill, so you must be creative.You can start with, or use the context of, a bad vehicular accident on the highway (real or imaginary). Talk about why the accident occurred, (somebody broke the rules). Talk about the deaths and pain which the event caused to those directly involved and also to their families, (the consequence of sin). Make it a story people can relate to. 5. Spin the Obvious to answer people's concerns.The Commandments say honor your father and mother. We know we have some mothers and fathers who are not good parents. Paint a picture of a horrible parent, and suggest that the commandment does not include them. Wow. The audience will jump all over you and say what you want them to say: God even included horrible parents. If they say it, you don't have to argue it.6. End early, (Even if you are not finished).It is a good practice to give your presentation an air of completeness. You can never present all there is about any topic. So each presentation can only cover so much. Racing to complete what you have written in your notes can kill your presentation. It is better to show command of your presentation by leaving out a point, than to kill the presentation by trying to squeeze in a few last points. If your presentation was done well, you can get in those last points during your Q & A session. 7. Stick to what you know and make it relevant. The best way to demonstrate this is with an anecdote. A biology teacher prepared his students for exams by predicting which animal the examiner would highlight. That year he predicted that the animal would be a lizard, and taught his class all about the lizard. Unfortunately he was wrong; the examiner asked about the mosquito. Whereas the other students panicked and gave up, one of the students, Jean, was not going down without a fight. She started her paper by making a very simple and general connection between the lizard and the mosquito. Then using her knowledge of the lizard she wrote about the mosquito. She knew the lizard had to eat to live, so too the mosquito. The lizard had to reproduce to maintain the species, so too the mosquito. Generally the lizard is unwelcomed in our homes, so to the mosquito. Jean passed the exam.Try these suggestions in your next presentation and tell us about the results.

lay Organization Fundamentals

THE MISSION The objectives and purpose of the Lay Organization are outlined in its Constitution. The main objectives are stated in brief as follows: 1. To create a love and appreciation of the History and Principles of African Methodism.2. Keep the memory of Richard Allen alive.3. Respect Constituted Authority.4. Stimulate and Educate the Laity in the Total Program of the Church.5. Study the Discipline and learn the laws of the Church.6. Encourage Financial Support of the Church's Program.7. Teach and Practice Stewardship and work with the Youth to teach them Methodism.8. These objectives can best be met when one works to understand the program of the church and relate the church to the World around us. Become involved in Social Action such that the church is then our Community - our Job - Our School, and everywhere that many assembles he carries the church with him.THE LAY BENEDICTION: May God bless us with the true spirit of Christianity, That we may live together, not as man over man, but as Lay persons working with God. Amen THE LAY HYMN Laymen now have thus assembled, In Thy blessed name O God. Guide us in our true endeavor, Light the pathway that we trod; Give us strength to ever labor for Thy cause Give us strength to ever labor for Thy cause. We are banded one in union, To fulfill Thy just command. May we be Thy true disciples, Holding to Thy mighty hand; Give us blessings from the fountain of Thy love Give us blessings from the fountain of Thy love.
